What is URL Encoding?

URL encoding (also known as Percent-Encoding) converts characters into a format that can be safely transmitted over the Internet. URLs can only be sent over the Internet using the ASCII character-set. Since URLs often contain characters outside the ASCII set (or reserved characters like spaces, ?, &, =, and #), they must be converted into a valid ASCII format.

Difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent:

  • encodeURIComponent (Default): Encodes almost all special characters including /, ?, :, @, &, =, +, $, and #. Use this mode when encoding query string key-value parameters.
  • encodeURI: Preserves standard URL structure symbols like protocols (http://), query start indicators (?), path slashes (/), and parameters (&). Use this mode when you want to fix invalid spaces or unicode in an entire valid URL structure.
